About this course

Mrdanga & Karatals Workshop

One of India’s most ancient drums, the mridanga (which literally means “body of clay”) remains the leading percussion accompaniment for kirtan, or chanting in glorification of Krishna.  A double-headed barrel-shaped drum, it is capable of producing an astonishing variety of sounds and tones, making it the most lyrical of all Indian percussion instruments.

Karatalas are hand cymbals made from bell metal which are extremely important in kirtan as they are used to set the rhythm which will be followed by everyone present.

Over 5 sessions, you will learn the mood and science behind devotional kirtan, mridanga mantras which you can take away with you and practice in your own time, universal mridanga and karatala beats that can be played in any kirtan, and intermediate level beats for those who are ready to move on.

Dates: 1 Mar - 29 Mar
Day: Sundays
Time: 2.00pm - 5.00pm
Duration: 5 sessions
Price: £45
