The SB begins by explaining one must be pure in heart to understand it. But at the same time, it seems we can only be purified by reading the SB. Could you help us to understand this please? How can we understand SB if we are not pure in heart?

So there different levels of reading the Bhagavatam, in the beginning were reading Bhagavatam for the purpose of purification, and then later on as we get more purified in heart then the deeper revelations of the Bhagavatam and particularly our connection with Krishna through the Bhagavatam becomes much more powerful, and Prabhupada eventually says that one can actually see Krishna in the pages of the Bhagavatam. So if you imagine when we take a bath in the morning then the first thing that happens is when the water hits your body you wake up, so that’s the first stage, later on what happens is that the body becomes cleansed, and then the third thing that happens, is that when the water is hot even while the body is cleansed one just enjoys being in that shower and can just relish being in that shower. So we can liken reading of the books to a shower, the first thing that happens when we read the Bhagavatam is we wake up, it awakens us to the reality, the second thing that happens is that we begin to cleanse our hearts, and the final thing that happens it becomes a relishable experience and we can actually understand what the Bhagavatam is. So there are different stages and levels of reading Bhagavatam, in the beginning for purification and in the later stages simply to relish and fully be enchanted by Krishna’s name, fame, form, qualities and pastimes.
