There’s an English poet who says, ‘no man is a social island’, so we all by our activities, by our consciousness, by our thoughts and desires have an effect on the world around us. So when we live in a pure way, when we follow the regulative principles, and when we encourage and proliferate that understanding through the world, then the effect of Kali-yuga is somewhat checked. So we know that Parikshit gave Kali four places to reside, where there is meat eating, where there is gambling, where there is intoxication and where there is illicit sex. So the more devotees refrain from such activities obviously in their own life, and then create a situation in the world where such activities are also minimised, then the effects of Kali-yuga become less, and the ultimate way to check the effects of Kali-yuga is by proliferating the chanting of the holy names of Krishna. It is explained that after Caitanya Mahāprabhu comes, even though we are in Kali-yuga, there’ll be a 10,000 year golden age within the Kali-yuga, in which the chanting of the holy names will basically, restrict the effects of Kali-yuga. So this is the great hope, kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann, asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ, kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya, mukta-saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet, that although Kali-yuga is the ocean of faults, there is one great quality, and that great quality is that by chanting the holy names of Krishna one can be freed from the influence of this age.
